Women In Motion at the Rencontres d'Arles 2022, an edition rich in projects and events

In an exceptional edition of the Rencontres d’Arles, where more than 50% of the works on display are by women, Kering is delighted to further extend its support for female photographers by sponsoring numerous events through its Women In Motion program.

The 2022 Women In Motion Award for photography goes to Babette Mangolte

On Tuesday July 5, 2022, during the first evening event at the Théâtre Antique in Arles, Kering and the Rencontres d'Arles will present the Women In Motion Award to the Franco-American photographer Babette Mangolte.

A solo exhibition, entitled Capturing Movement in Space and curated by María Inés Rodríguez, will be devoted to her work at the Saint-Anne church in Arles. To mark the occasion, a special issue of the Women In Motion series published by Fisheye magazine will be dedicated to Babette Mangolte and her exhibition in Arles, with the photographs accompanied by a commentary by leading experts from the world of culture.

The Women In Motion Award, which has been celebrating the work of an outstanding photographer every year since 2019, was presented to Susan Meiselas in 2019, Sabine Weiss in 2020 and Liz Johnson Artur in 2021.

Supporting the ‘Cartographies Du Corps’ exhibition by Susan Meiselas and Marta Gentilucci

Women In Motion is proud to be supporting an exhibition by Susan Meiselas, the first winner of the Women In Motion Award in 2019. The works on display at the Rencontres d'Arles are presented in a collaboration with composer Marta Gentilucci at the Saint-Blaise church.

In Cartographies du corps, Susan Meiselas and Marta Gentilucci use images and sound to capture the vital force that inhabits older women, evoking the intensity of lives that are still full of energy and beauty - a beauty that comes from the overlap of their collective experience.

Women In Motion LAB 2021/2022 : supporting the monograph and exhibition on Bettina Grossman by Yto Barrada

Launched in 2019 by Kering and the Rencontres d'Arles in parallel with their award, the Women In Motion LAB program provides practical support for a project highlighting women in photography.

For the second edition of the LAB, starting in 2021, Kering and the Rencontres wanted to support the work being carried out by artist Yto Barrada to research and promote Bettina Grossman's archives, and to stage an exhibition during the July 2022 festival.

Yto Barrada began a major research project on Bettina's collections in 2017. The result is a monograph containing an exceptional body of photographic, cinematographic, and graphic work by the artist, who was inspired by conceptual sculpture.

Already a winner of the 2020 Luma Rencontres Dummy Book Award Arles, the book is published by Atelier EXB and will be unveiled during the opening week of the Rencontres in July 2022.

The solo exhibition Bettina. A Poem of Perpetual Renewal at the Salle Henri-Comte in Arles, which is also supported by the Women In Motion LAB, will accompany this major book launch.

Women In Motion LAB 2019/2021: supporting ‘Une Histoire Mondiale Des Femmes Photographes’ and its English edition

The first edition of the LAB, which ran from 2019 to 2021, was dedicated to a research project that highlighted women’s contribution to the world history of photography.

Led by historians Luce Lebart and Marie Robert, with the help of 160 women authors from every continent, the project looks back at the careers and works of some 300 women who have made their mark on photography since the art form began. The project led to a book Une histoire mondiale des femmes photographes, published by Textuel.

An English-language version of the book, A World History of Women Photographers, also supported by the LAB, will be published in July 2022 by Thames & Hudson.

Supporting the Prix de la Photo Madame Figaro Arles

Kering is very proud to renew its support for the Prix de la Photo Madame Figaro Arles, which it has sponsored through its Women In Motion program since the award was created in 2016.

The 2022 Prix de la Photo Madame Figaro Arles will be awarded during the final evening at the Théâtre Antique d'Arles on Friday July 8 to a young woman whose creative daring has won over an illustrious jury. Like her predecessors, the winner will also produce a photographic series for Madame Figaro magazine.

In previous editions, Laia Abril, Paz Errázuriz, Wiktoria Wojciechowska, Evangelía Kranióti and Eythar Gubara have been awarded for their vibrant and committed artistic approach.

Supporting Anima by Noémie Goudal and Maëlle Poésy at the Festival D'Avignon

As part of the first ever partnership between the Rencontres d'Arles and the Festival d’Avignon, Women In Motion is pleased to support performances of Anima, created by Noémie Goudal and Maëlle Poésy.

Anima will be performed at the Collection Lambert in Avignon from July 8, echoing Noémie Goudal's Phoenix exhibition presented during this edition of the Rencontres d'Arles.

Through video and music, Anima describes the invisible metamorphoses of the landscapes and places in which we live.

    About Women In Motion

Kering's commitment to women is at the heart of the Group's priorities and extends, through Women In Motion, to the field of arts and culture, where gender inequalities are still glaring, even though creation is one of the most powerful vectors for change.

In 2015, Kering launched Women In Motion at the Festival de Cannes with the ambition of highlighting women in cinema, both in front of and behind the camera. The program has since expanded in a major way to photography, but also to art, design, choreography and music. Through its Awards, the program recognizes inspirational figures and young female talent, while its Talks provide an opportunity for leading personalities to share their views on the representation of women in their profession.

For the past eight years, Women In Motion has been a platform of choice that contributes to changing mind sets and thinking on the place of women - and the recognition they receive - in the arts and culture.

    About the Recontres D'Arles

Through exhibitions held in various exceptional heritage sites around the city, the Rencontres d’Arles has contributed to supporting worldwide photographic heritage every summer since 1970, and in so doing has become a melting pot for contemporary creation. A true cultural incubator for artists, the Rencontres d’Arles is an annual hub for photographic creation. Echoing and promoting artistic reflections and practices at a crossroads of disciplines, the Rencontres d’Arles each year presents the work of more than 200 artists and curators, through 40 exhibitions in venues with specially designed scenographies.

For an ever more discerning public, the festival reveals trends, forges new paths, explores and questions the status of the changing image, creating content that reflects the sociological and geographical diversity of our world. The 53rd edition of the Rencontres d'Arles will take place from July 4 to September 25, 2022.
