On September 29, during Sustainable Fashion Week, Kering and the Center for Sustainable Fashion (CSF) at the London College of Fashion brought together researchers, industry professionals, creatives, and decision-makers at the Barbican Conservatory in London for the event “Being and Beings in Luxury Fashion: Governance, Voices, and Behavior for Tomorrow” as part of the Governance for Tomorrow program.
This event marked a significant milestone in the Governance for Tomorrow research program, a three-year initiative conducted in partnership between Kering and the CSF to explore new approaches to governance in luxury fashion.
Giving Voice to New Perspectives
Building on the lessons learned during the program’s first 18 months, the event offered an immersive experience inviting participants to rethink decision-making mechanisms within luxury fashion companies.
At the heart of the discussion: how to incorporate a greater diversity of voices, knowledge, and perspectives into governance processes. This intergenerational, intragenerational, and interspecies approach calls for consideration not only of the needs of the present but also of those of future generations, the diversity of cultures and knowledge, and the living ecosystems on which we depend.
An immersive experience to explore governance in a new way
Guests were invited to explore three interconnected thematic worlds:
- Future Beings, dedicated to representing past, present, and future generations in corporate decision-making;
- Cultural Beings, exploring the influence of cultures, knowledge, and human relationships on organizational choices;
- More-than-human Beings, examining the role of nature, living systems, and emerging technologies in governance models.
Through various interactive installations, participants were invited to challenge existing models and envision new forms of governance and value creation for the luxury sector.
The experience concluded with a collective reflection session, allowing participants to share their ideas and contribute directly to the ongoing research.
A Long-Term Partnership Driving Industry Transformation
The Governance for Tomorrow program builds on the partnership between Kering and the Center for Sustainable Fashion, which began in 2014. Initially focused on education, student support, and the development of knowledge around sustainable fashion, this partnership has gradually expanded its scope to examine the decision-making structures that shape the industry.
“At Kering, we believe that strong governance depends on the voices it listens to. Education matters to us because the next generation will not simply inherit luxury, they will redefine it. With Governance for Tomorrow, we want those voices to be heard where decisions are made” said Marie-Claire Daveu, Kering’s Chief Sustainability and Institutional Affairs Officer.
